Triathlon Prep: The Cycle

So you’ve taken the plunge and decided to compete in an upcoming triathlon. Congratulations!

Take a look at some of our top tips below for the cycle leg of the race.

As always, if you’d like to alleviate some of the nerves in the run up to the competition, allow us to transport your bike for you by clicking here.

Pro tips:

  1. You don’t need a state of the art tri bike to compete. A good quality, non fixed-wheel triathlon bicycle will do perfectly. Just ensure it’s been recently serviced, the fit is correct and has two working brakes!

  2. Don’t forget, the rules around helmets at the race are very strict. You must ensure that your helmet is on and secured before handling your bicycle.

  3. Don’t forget to train outdoors. What we mean by this is, training on racing bikes in the gym is not the same as practicing outside on different terrain. It’s good to train with different weather conditions also.

  4. Choose your exercise types wisely. Ensure your back is well prepared for the race with good stretching beforehand. Train your legs to be strong throughout the pedalling motion. Squats, split squats and lunging will help with this.

  5. Make sure you’re hydrating enough during the bike race and consuming the right amount of carbs – gels and energy bars will make this easier.

  6. Invest in a good quality pair of triathlon shorts. Trust us, the pain isn’t worth the risk..
